101: Promoting and Supporting Nutrition Services: The Role of Support Staff

This session hopes to engage and empower our front line staff, who often do not have a nutrition background, to get excited about working for a really important public health nutrition program that benefits so many families. As our ‘Director of First Impressions’ in the WIC clinic, we want clerk and tech staff to know, love, and promote the great benefits of our WIC program. In this session, we will provide an overview of the new staff training designed to highlight support staff’s role in promoting and supporting nutrition education in the WIC Program. We will discuss key aspects of the training with the hope staff will complete the rest once back at their clinic. The training highlights WIC nutrition education purpose and methods, the Michigan WIC Food Guide and why specific foods are included, and provides ideas on how to respond to nutrition-related FAQs our clerks/techs hear in the clinic.
